Jack’s Road

The kids have a day off school today so we (the kids and I) walked 1KM down the road to “Jack’s Road” which is a protected heritage road. It’s really just a scenic dirt road where people are not allowed to cut the trees on either side. It was very pretty (pictures attached).

There are beaches galore in every direction and It’s going to be a lot of fun soon. K needs to figure out a work schedule where she can still come along on some of the outings.

We put the three older chicks outside in the barn as they were getting pretty stinky and they seemed big enough to go out… They were fine the next morning, but when I went out in the afternoon, the rooster’s body was near the rat hole opening without a head… It startled me and I did not tell the kids the details, but needless to say we need to get rid of the rats. I felt so guilty.

Other news:

  • People are starting to book their visits with us
  • We need to buy a new furnace and do some things to our wood stove to get it insured
  • The horses have somehow lost all respect for me and turn the bums towards me when I am in the paddock (very disrespectful!)

  • One of the horses kicked me in the crotch (lightly if that is really possible) and put a footprint on the front of my pants that was very impressive :-)
    (unfortunately, there was no swelling)

  • My to do list for things around the house grows and nothing actually gets done…
  • K’s karate class is going well. The kids and the parents love it.

Chicks

By Gentleman Farmer at 7:50 pm on April 2, 2005 | No comments

Here’s a picture of our three new Mille Fleurs chicks. They will look very different when older, of course.

They are “show” chickens. The kids are thinking of joining 4H and showing them.

We are now up to 10 chickens. 7 hens and 3 roosters. There are 7 eggs in our incubator, but we don’t expect most of them to hatch. There are kid of a test run of the incubator as we ordered another 2 dozen hatching eggs from this guy in Quebec. They should be an assortment of interesting breeds. Apparently, only 1/4 of eggs that are shipped normally hatch… After these are all hatched, we’ll stop with making chickens (intentionally) for a while. :-)
