2nd Annual Lord Selkirk Charity Celtic Music Festival

We attended Hamish’s “2nd Annual Lord Selkirk Charity Celtic Music Festival.” The concert was great and we had a great time watching from our blanket and lawn chairs. Teresa Doyle was great as was Patricia Murray. It was great when they sang together!

The sunset was absolutely amazing. It was great to sit and listen to the music and watch the sun go down just to the right of the stage.

Cape Bear Lighthouse

By Gentleman Farmer at 7:00 pm on August 26, 2005 | No comments

We went to see the Cape Bear lighthouse today. It costs way too much money to go inside and see the tiny little museum, so no pictures from inside.

You can see the “cliff” down to the beach and some of the soil erosion problems that the island is dealing with. The lighthouse had to be moved back so it would not fall off the cliff.

Fall Bounty

By Gentleman Farmer at 12:23 pm on | No comments

Well - late summer bounty… :-)
The garden is starting to produce things other than weeds. The weeds are 4 feet tall leafy things that our friend Charles says can be eaten, but we are more interested in pulling them. We put lots of pretty fresh horse poop on the garden this year and it was likely the source of all the weeds. I’ve started to “manage the manure” so we will always have some old composted poop and this will work a lot better… (Perhaps the next post will be pictures of this :-)
We are now getting zucchini, cucumber and beans out of the garden. We will soon also have lots of tomatoes, chard, corn and squash. There is also some lettuce, radishes and beets in there if we can find them in between the weeds.

Ironically, the potatoes look really tired. I guess the total lack of pesticides may be part of the problem. I have pulled some out from under a plant or two and they are small and look a bit like something has already been munching on them, but seem to be edible still.

Point Prim Lighthouse & Races

By Gentleman Farmer at 9:03 am on August 24, 2005 | No comments

Took a drive to the Point Prim lighthouse today.

Built in 1845, it’s pretty cool. It is the oldest lighthouse on the island and the only round brick light house in Canada. We climbed to the top and checked out the amazing view. (click the picture for larger version)

We also checked out the races that are on every Wednesday at 6PM at the Pinette race track. Check out the photo finish:-)

There’s no betting at the Pinette race track, but I did pick the winner of the second race!

On returning from the races, we put our horses to bed and found that Oopsie was not interested in eating and soon lay down in her stall. K came running in from the barn to call the vet who zoomed over to our place. We walked her around in hopes of keeping her moving, but she eventually looked like she would fall down or lie down outside in the paddock (in the dark), so K brought her back into her stall and let her lie down in there. 40 minutes later Oopsie was now breathing heavily and sweating like crazy, but at least the vet had arrived. The vet checked her out and said that everything seemed fine with her except that her stomach was making a lot of noise. K and the vet threaded a hose up poor Oopsie’s nose to get down to her stomach so they could administer some mineral oil and something else (I was not there as I had to run in and check out what all the screaming was about in the house - scared child looking for me). Before the vet was even gone, Oopsie was up and looking better (and eating a bit of hay). She probably ate something that was giving her some horrible gas pains.

Oopsie’s first time

By Gentleman Farmer at 8:30 am on August 11, 2005 | No comments

We “rode” Oopsie for the first time today. It was the first time that anyone has sat on her. Previous to today, we had put the saddle on her with the girth left a little lose and walked her around.

Today, I just climbed on her and K led her around. It was fun! Check out my stylish helmet. I was telling K that I did not need one, but she pointed me to a web site with lots of pictures of people with squashed heads. . .
