Peahen

A few days ago someone arrived at our door and offered us a peahen. He said that his peacock had died and that she was not happy since. You might ask how one can tell if a bird is unhappy. :-) Since one of our peacocks had died, the other has been acting differently. He seems to be sitting around a lot (I guess that we automatically think that it is unhappy).

Anyways, we accepted his offer and he arrived yesterday with the bird tied in bag. It’s amazing that it survived the trip. Instead of letting it out inside the barn where it would be living, he opened the bag just outside the barn door. It walked around the paddock and disappeared just as it started to pour with rain. K looked for it, but it had disappeared. Much later in the day, we spotted it walking around and the two of us ran around in the rain until we caught it. This is no small feat with an animal that can fly away when you scare it.

She’s in the barn since last night and we will likely keep her locked up in there today as well.

Today: Computers & horses

By Gentleman Farmer at 8:11 pm on October 12, 2005 | No comments

I went to the school today and met with the principal regarding starting a computer club for the kids. We are going to put up a signup sheet for grades 4 through 9 and see how it goes from there. I will probably meet early next week with the kids who signed up at lunch time to talk about what the club will and won’t be.

There us still no high speed internet in our area and it is driving me crazy! I know that there is something coming this way in some sort of wireless format, but there it little to no information on their web site as to what, when and how. :-(

Oopsie decided to have another bout of colic today. She just lay down in the paddock in obvious pain this afternoon. K and I went out there to make her walk around for a while and she looked a lot better after about 20 minutes. Have you ever tried to make an animal 6 times your weight do anything she is not keen on? Needless to say, I got a good work out as well as Oopsie. It was especially fun when she spooked (a little) because a car went by when we were down by the side of the paddock near the road. Anyway, she was munching and looking fine by the time we went back in…

A few hours later she started to lie down again. I started to make her move around and K went in to call the vet for advice (Unlike MTL, they’ll do that here and not just tell you, “I’ll have to look at her myself and charge you $200 to tell you that she has a tummy ache”). We decided to give her a shot of something for the pain. The vet left us a syringe from that last time that this happened, so we had one handy. This was not a lot of fun to do as I have never done this kind of stuff (and likely never will) and K has not done it for 15 years. She poked poor Oopsie in the neck, but did not find the vein. Right then our neighbour who happens to be a paramedic came home and we asked him for help. :-) Since he is not used to this type of patient, he also had trouble in finding a vein. Well, we knew where her vein was. It was finding it with the needle that was difficult. We gave her the shot in her rump. That got her to stand up pretty quickly (poor girl). She immediately looked a lot better. Actually, she immediately looked angry, but that very quickly became a lot better. I had to go off to buy some anti-gas stuff from the vet because we had not actually treated the problem (just the pain).

An hour later when I returned with the gas medicine, K and I are out at the barn playing vet again. Imagine trying to force feed poor Oopsie this horrid mint flavoured yuck (you would think they would go with something more like hay flavour). So you stick the bottle down her cheek into the space between her molars and front teeth and push her head up so she can’t just spit it right back out. Then you hold her head up… The thing about this maneuver is that I am doing this on my own because K is not tall enough. Oopsie is just so big and I am trying to keep her head up about 7 feet high… In a matter of minutes there is green mint goop raining down on both of us and my arms are on fire from pushing against a very big girl who very much wants her head down. We still manage to get most of it in her. The whole time this is going on we have our ever helpful Hilly sticking her head out of her stall and bugging us for attention because she wants some of the obviously amazing treat we are trying to get Oopsie to choke down :-) . Then Hill is biting Oopsie while I am struggling to keep her head up. I managed to get Hill to leave us alone for a bit by giving her a taste of the medicine. :-) Whenever she looks over our way, I show her the bottle and she turns around.

Anyway, we all kept our sense of humour and it looks like everyone will be fine. One of use will go out and check on her again before bed.

And then there was one (peacock pancake)

By Gentleman Farmer at 5:19 pm on October 3, 2005 | No comments

I went out early Saturday morning to feed the horses. For some reason I put the hay down towards the road side of the paddock. Then I saw it. A blue and green lump iridescently shimmering in the sun at the side of the road.

It hadn’t been long and it had surely been quick. He was buried with honours in that manure pile. Few attended, but people would later tearfully say that the service was beautiful.
