Partners in crime

Portobello and one of the “barn cats” plays together all the time.

The crazy cat has figured out how to open the cupboard where we keep the pet food. This was driving us crazy today, so we put a chair in front of the cupboard for some temporary relief from chasing the silly cat away.

The pig and cat have teamed up to get in. The pig easily pushes the chair out of the way and the kitten opens the door up for the two of them…

If I get pictures, they will be posted.

Pig Sounds

By Gentleman Farmer at 5:58 pm on March 21, 2006 | No comments

I’m sitting by the computer working and Mr. Portobello is locked up in his “pig pen” because the dogs are eating. He pushes them aside and displays horrible “dog manners.” They retaliate with growling and biting which he does not seem to understand or notice.

He is complaining loudly about wanting to go an push them aside to gobble down their food.

Here is what he sounds like:

Pork on the couch

By Gentleman Farmer at 4:31 pm on | No comments

Here’s a couple quick pictures of the pork sitting on the couch with his favourite foot. They hang out on the couch all the time (usually in the evenings). Don’t they look cute together?

Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family. . .

By Gentleman Farmer at 4:51 pm on March 17, 2006 | No comments

-Please bow your heads-

Thank you for coming…

We are here today to honour unnamed buff brahma chicken. Although extremely short she led a good life. Oopsie did not mean to squish her so completely….

Unnamed chicken was a big beautiful fluffy hen that laid a nice brown egg every second day. Her passing has left us all shocked, but we remember her with fondness and empty stomachs.

After a week of being available for viewing in the garbage bin, unnamed chicken was gracefully dumped today into a large truck that passes at the end of the driveway.

-Amen-

The story of Lucky the Chicken

By Gentleman Farmer at 10:27 pm on March 14, 2006 | No comments

I was at The Store a while back mailing some packages (like every day). Upon leaving, I see this chicken come walking around the corner… After speaking with “Tiz” at the store, I find out that the neighbour had to give up their chickens. When the folks were rounding them up, this one had escaped and had been wandering around The Store for days.
The kids named her “Lucky” as she was surely saved from an unsavory end. She’s a leghorn (read commercial layer) and gives us a nice big white egg everyday :-)

Heat Powered Fan

By Gentleman Farmer at 3:13 pm on March 5, 2006 | No comments

We purchased this cool heat powered fan. It, of course, blows faster when the stove is hot and stops automatically when the stove is cold.

It really helps to circulate the heat from the stove.

Oh God! It *expletive* stinks!!

By Gentleman Farmer at 6:49 am on March 2, 2006 | 3 Comments

*expletive* Molly!

*expletive* skunk!!

*expletive* Stench!!!

*expletive* Molly ran outside and chased an *expletive* skunk last night. In Molly’s mind there is some debate as to if the *expletive* skunk or *expletive* Molly won the game of tag. It does not really matter who won as K and I are sure who *expletive* lost…

It must have happened right outside the *expletive* back door as the *expletive* odor of skunk is constantly eking into the *expletive* house. Molly does not smell at all, however as I found this recipe online.

Here is an “improved” skunk odor remover given to me by a vet. I noticed that you have a skunk odor remover for dogs. I have tried both of these and they work OK but there is still a residual amount of skunk odor on the animals, and with this bit of smell the dogs cannot come inside.

1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
1/2 bottle water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon dog shampoo

Mix hydrogen peroxide with water. Add baking soda and dog shampoo. Mix and pour into a squirt bottle/sprayer. Spray entire bottle onto dog, being careful not to get it directly into his eyes/nose. Let everything stand for 5 to 10 minutes while working the solution into his fur. Rinse……your dog will have NO odor. You can have him sit on your lap and you will not smell ANYTHING.

NOTE: Vinegar and tomato juice are acidic solutions which can solubilize and wash away the stinky components of the skunk. However you can never really wash away 100% of the stench which is a sulfur containing compound. The peroxide oxidizes the sulfur (thiols) to a compound that has no odor.

It really works fantastically.

I’d like to thank everyone who recently mentioned that there was nothing new here for a while. Your wishes for something notable to happen have been granted! :-P
