Spring is in the Air - Literally

By Gentleman Farmer at 9:39 pm on April 27, 2006 | 2 Comments

The sun is starting to get warmer and the days are longer, but nothing says spring like the smell of liquid pig manure! The tractors have started going by the house towing huge drums on wheels full of the stuff.

When you buy an air freshener that is called “Spring Breeze” or “Country Fresh,” you should be very wary. Who knows if it will be an accurate representation or some flowery fake.

Spring Hatch 2006

More damn chickens!!

As we are only getting about 10 eggs a day and can’t give them away fast enough, “we” have decided to hatch some more chickens….

It seems a bit crazy to that we spend about $15 a week on eggs (chicken and barn-rat food), but hey… Doesn’t the normal Canadian family spend about $800/year on eggs?

The kids plan to have a summer job of egg selling :-) We will print a sign for free range chicken eggs. Hopefully we will be able to break even. “B” came up with a great slogan: “Happy Chickens Make Happy Eggs.”

We will also advertise the “Easter Egg” factor. The eggs are coloured: traditional white, green, cream, and various shades of brown. Our egg tray is always a rainbow of yumminess.

On another note of interest. We had our first car of the season that stopped at the end of the drive today to check out something cool about our farm. They stopped to check out Thomas (our enormous Buff Brahma Rooster), but what kept them sitting there long enough for us to go out an see what was up was Pride the peacock.
