Horse Sperm!

By Gentleman Farmer at 10:13 am on | No comments

Two years ago, if you asked me if horse sperm would top my wife’s gift-mas list, I would have dropped my gloves and demanded to know exactly what you were implying about my wife (and myself). But here we are living in the country and the first thing on the list appears as follows:

book Hilly for 2008 foal with Adalusian stallion (I have two picked out!)

This looks like an innocent item on a list, but it isn’t! This means that she wants a vial of horse sperm! Blecko! Worse than that, we will end up with another horse! I don’t see any reason why we need another hay burner, but she says we do. When I explain that perhaps we should free up some space in our crowded paddock for a new one by removing one of the ones we have now, I am told that she couldn’t possibly give up sweet Oopsie (who she has taught to hug her) and wonderful Hilly (who is fun to ride, but will never be a champion) or cute little Sophie (who is for the children to ride and coming along nicely). Why don’t we just build a bigger paddock?<sigh> . . . Also, inseminating one’s mare is not an inexpensive procedure. It’s about as expensive as buying a new computer. Wait a minute… Perhaps this is not such a bad idea after all… :-)

Snuggle Time

By Gentleman Farmer at 4:37 pm on November 27, 2006 | No comments

Nothing is more soothing than snuggling up in front of the fire with a friend on a cold day. Lester and Portobello shared some love today. We expect to see much more of this throughout this winter. :-)

An Olde Fashioned Barn Raising

By Gentleman Farmer at 7:51 pm on November 21, 2006 | No comments

Rick and Kelly were raising an indoor riding arena on Sunday. They had the posts dug and planted already, but had to assemble the trusses (skeleton) and put the tarp up.
Trusses before cover

I got there around 9:30 AM and people were already working on the trusses, so I helped work on the barn that they are building an extension onto. The picture shows some (hot) young fella helping remove a door that was later re-attached in a new location.

Here is the crew downing a quick brown bottle of Popey-esque liquid strength before starting to pull the tarp on.

Here are the nine of us pulling on the tarp. You had to pull it all the way up and over the building with long metal polls that would run through a pocket on the end.
Everyone pulling

A couple of pictures of the tarp part of the way up.

I left around 5:00 PM and the sides were not on yet; it was still raining and very dark. Rick said he was going to go back out and work on the sides after eating, but I think I would have not been getting back out there myself after a day like he had.
(Rick and Kelly if you read this: You owe me big time! :-) )

Redneck Trailer

By Gentleman Farmer at 8:17 pm on November 17, 2006 | 1 Comment

I took a slightly different route home from The Store yesterday and passed a broken down redneck trailer on the way.

Redneck Trailer - 2nd hand pickup Redneck Trailer - 2nd hand pickup

I guess that it no longer functioned very well as a pickup because the back wheel kept falling off. It must have only been there for a short time as I have been down the same road not all that long ago and I have not seen it before.

Another short way along the same road, I believe that I may have come across the owner of the trailer. The poor guy must have been so upset about the problems with his favourite pickup as to have finally given up and thrown himself in from one a tractor.

When I was growing up, there was a cable TV channel that played a fireplace 24 hours a day. Here is my tribute:

The 6th Annual PEI Awards Show Gala

By Gentleman Farmer at 9:50 am on November 10, 2006 | No comments

We went to this “Gala” event tonight. It was my first and quite possibly (hopefully) last awards show that I will ever go to.

The Charlottetown Confederation Centre for the Arts’ auditorium is about the size of many class rooms I sat in at University. The high tech wizardry of a projection screen that could ascend and descend when needed was coupled with a snazzy PowerPoint (arguably one of the worst presentation software out there) presentation that was loaded with 1980’s style clipart graphics. These were also accompanied with a female voice-over with echo effect that would read out the list of nominees for each category.

There was a severe lack of paparazzi and I am sure that absolutely no one will be “a buzz” about what any of the performers were wearing. :-) It seems that even when performing on the big stage in the capital city, you are expected to dress like a farmer (or as K out it, “Like you just rolled out of bed after a four day bender.”)

Some of the performances were very good; others were good for a laugh. I actually went onto the Sandbar Music Group’s web site and purchased three albums as a result (you can download a couple of samplers of the artists they represent). Catherine MacLellan cleaned up winning four awards in various categories. Fugato also won a couple of awards and have an interesting sound.

The lifetime achievement award was given to Haywire. Apparently, these guys were big in the 80’s, but I did not recall who they were or any of the songs they performed. K, Rick and Kelly did, so I guess I was just the oddity in the audience.

All in all, I am not sure of if the evening was fun, interesting, funny or just plain boring. I was tempted to leave during the intermission, but as I was there with a group, I did not mention this. The second half of the show was actually much better than the first and I’m glad I stayed, so that I could brag that I managed to sit through the whole thing. I know that I will definitely not being going back to another of these award shows anytime soon. It had a very similar feel as to sitting through a grade school Xmas concert, except for slightly better chairs and no basketball nets on every side of the show.

Oh yeah, the title sponsors were PEI’s two most recent “Rock” radio stations:

  1. Ocean 100.3 (“We play anything.” – soft & often outdated and usually boring)
  2. Krock 105.5 (It still K-sucks)

You know the radio stations are really bad, when the kids all cry if I turn it on in the car and shout at me to turn it off. This is often emphasized with a constant kicking of my seat. :-)

Halloween Candy

By Gentleman Farmer at 5:13 pm on November 7, 2006 | 1 Comment
Portobello is a constantly milling around to grab any candy that might fall from a table or even to devour a wrapper. His absolute favourite though is a piece of precious ABC gum. If he finds a piece of gum, you can look forward to hours of lip-smacking piggy bliss.

Halloween . . .

By Gentleman Farmer at 11:57 pm on November 1, 2006 | 1 Comment

MwaHaHaHaHaHahaaaaa! IMG_7480.JPG

The kids are old enough to carve their own pumpkins now and we had fun making these. They were carved (from left to right) by me, K, “B” and “Big D”. There was another that I carved up also, but it was not near these when I was taking pictures. Three car loads of kids arrived at our door for a total of about 10 kids! I was left at home to give out candy and the stress of waiting, doing nothing, helping myself to the candy, waiting some more, drinking a cup of tea. . . was exhausting. K got the easy end of that deal! Getting all the kids in the car, driving for 2 seconds, getting all the kids out of the car, getting all the kids in the car. . . Lucky her!I think that the Flanders must have moved because I found this in the kids’ candy bags. Thankfully, I grabbed it before it could do any harm. I mean what type of crazy person would give something like the following to children?! God loves me all covered up in makeup or with a hideous skeleton mask on! That bastard! He, she they or it must be the type of “friend” who screams, “Ah, put the mask back on!” when you show your real face.

God loves you. Pfffrrrt!

The sunset was beautiful today.
